CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Two Ancients, a powerful bitch of a shifter, a mysterious mind healer, two shadow mages, a talented shadow goblin, an ice mage, a frost giant, and ten others I needed to categorize. I turned to ask Dunstan beside me, but he already stared at me. “What?”

He grinned. “That little nap didn’t help you much, did it?”

I’d collapsed face down on my bed after being quietly terrorized by Minco and Nisha. I hadn’t budged until Mac and Dunstan pounded on my door at supper time. “I was cataloguing the mages.”

Mac slid a roasted cherry tomato from his kebab stick. “Why?”

Because the current situation could easily deteriorate into an us-versus-them. Our odds ruined my appetite. Mac trusted me to protect him while he worked on the hardened collective conscience of these isolated Magics. I refused to worry him, so I just shrugged. “It’s what I do.”

Rick pointed an empty stick at Dunstan. “He asked how your session with the goblin went.”

“His name is Vasile.” I corrected him without thinking, irritation flicking to the tip of my tongue.

The piece of meat in Rick’s fingers paused halfway to his mouth which frowned. “Sorry. I didn’t remember.”

Everyone else tensed. Except Mitchel. He stared at the untouched kebabs on his plate as if they were puzzles to solve before he could eat. He hadn’t gone near Gunn since the mind-healing of a lifetime. Young guys always tapped-out early.

Rick still held food midair. I tossed a roll at him which he caught with his other hand. “Sorry I snapped. It’s just that he’s sensitive to not being human. I can relate.”

“Andromeda,” Mac started to assure me of my humanity, no doubt, but I interrupted.

“It’s okay, Mac. We need to focus on the mission. With Josiah’s concerns and Asa’s hostility, I don’t think we can stay much longer.”

Dunstan shifted to face me. “Josiah has concerns?”

“Yes.”

“We’ll discuss it tonight.” Mac rolled his eyes to Nisha who approached our table.

Her Ancient status still pricked my skin, but she did have a pleasant smile. “May I?” She nodded at the empty spot beside me.

Mac’s face warned me to be diplomatic. At least he couldn’t tell that I wanted to run away more than anything. “Sure.” I scooted closer to Dunstan though she had plenty of room.

“I fear you have not received a warm welcome from us. We let caution get in the way of hospitality. I apologize.” She had old-fashioned speech and manners while her brother personified twentieth-century cowboy. I wondered where they learned English and culture after their little thousand-year nap. Her serious brown eyes briefly met the gaze of each of us. Mitchel even glanced up at her words. The welcoming smile on her lips never faltered.

What a load of shit. “We’re good,” I said.

“Oh, yes.” Mac found his Mr. Manners smile. “The jika never fail to make us comfortable.”

Her smooth brow wrinkled, and I struggled to believe this woman was hundreds of years old. “It is their nature to please. Unfortunately, not everyone returns their good will.”

She could read a table.
